*228 is the code for updating the PRL or Preferred Roaming List and to activate devices. Few Verizon users have reported issues with the *228 code. The most common complaints regarding the *228 code have been about not being able to dial the code from a particular device.

Sometimes it shows the error message that the number is not allowed and sometimes it gives the message that the code is incorrect. If you are facing this issue on the Verizon line then here are three things that you can do to troubleshoot the issue.

Verizon *228 Not Working

1 – Force Update on Your Phone

Many of the technical issues and errors in cellphones and telecommunication services are caused by evolving technology. The issue of the *228 code not working seems to be a product of technological evolution as well. Before the introduction of the 4G LTE devices, there was a need to type the code into the phone to update the PRL. However, if you are using a 4G LTE device, now there is no need for you to manually update the Preferred Roaming List.

In all the 4G LTE devices, the SIM cards handle the Preferred Roaming List updates. However, if you are unable to see the update then what you need to do is to force the update on your phone. You can do that by turning off your phone, taking out the SIM card just for 5 to 10 minutes, and then putting it back inside the phone and rebooting the phone. It will most probably get rid of the issue and your Preferred Roaming List will be automatically updated after the phone starts again.

Some of the most commonly used 4G LTE devices include Apple iPhone XS, Apple iPhone 8 Plus, Apple iPhone XR, Samsung Galaxy Note 10, Samsung Galaxy S9, Samsung Galaxy S10, Samsung GalaxyS9+, Google Pixel 3,  One Plus 6T, LG G6, and LG V30+ among others.

2 – Make sure you are Dialing the Code from within the Service Area

If you do not have a device with 4G LTE and still you are facing the problem while trying to update the Preferred Roaming List then first you need to make sure that you are within the service area. If you are at a location where there are weak or no cellular signals you will not be able to get the desired service.

3 – Contact Customer Support

If you do not have a device with 4G LTE, you are located within the service area, and still, you are facing the problem while trying to update the Preferred Roaming List then it is an issue that needs to be taken up with Verizon's customer support representatives. You can call them and let them know the situation as to what you are trying to do and what error message you are getting. They will try their best to help you sort the issue over the phone. However, if the issue persists you may need to visit your nearest Verizon sales office to get rid of the issue.
