It's been a little more than a year since Zack Snyder's Justice League, a long-awaited dream of Snyder fans and the director himself, debuted on HBO Max, ushering a wave of subscribers for the platform and huge applause for Zack Snyder, who thoroughly perfected his vision for the DCEU. The film was far away from the revitalized version of Joss Whedon and was essentially an entirely new film, which Snyder left the production due to a personal tragedy. From story arcs to character designs, everything was different about the Snyder Cut, and the inclusion of Jared Leto's Joker was the cherry on the top.

In the movie, Snyder brought back Jared Leto as a redesigned and evolved iteration of DCEU's Joker for a newly written sequence that he shot in his garage. Reflecting back on his return as Joker, Jared told ComicbookMovie,

It was great. Working with Zack[Snyder] is a beautiful thing. I adore him. I really loved the opportunity. It was really special, and I enjoyed it a lot. It's a unique thing to have been part of DC and to now have been part of Marvel [in reference to 'Marius']. It's pretty amazing.

Jared Leto's Return as Joker

Joker's Evolution from Suicide Squad to Zack Snyder's Justice League Explained by Jared Leto

Jared Leto, who previously played the character in David Ayer's Suicide Squad was earlier disappointed over his reduced role in the theatrical version of the film, as well as the neglect from the studio for not considering him to play Arthur Fleck in Joker (which eventually turned out to be a fine call). However, when Snyder was given the ultimate creative control over Zack Snyder's Justice League (against the deal that he won't get paid for the film), he decided to add elements to his story and reshoot certain scenes of it. These reshoots included a fresh scene, not written for the original script, featuring a confrontation between the Joker and his archnemesis Batman.

In the scene, set in the Knightmare timeline that would have set up a sequel, Batman teams up with the remaining members of the Justice League, Mera, Slade Wilson, and his adversary Joker, to steal a mother box against the forces of Darkseid, which now includes an evil Superman. The short conversation saw Joker diving deep into Batman's remorseful past, taunting him for his failures in protecting the world and his loved ones. The scene foreshadowed a heavily dark conflict two are in and was a joyous moment for the fans to witness.

While the scene ends abruptly with evil Superman's arrival at the scene, it perfectly weaved Joker into the continuity Snyder had wanted to establish throughout and gave fans another altercation between the caped crusader and Gotham's clown prince of crime.

His appearance legitimized the "We Live In A Society" meme, which further helped the film receive press and publicity. Later, Leto also promoted the purchase of a T-shirt with the same punchline, as an effort to raise donations for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which Zack Snyder advocates.

Earlier last year, Snyder, while talking to Total Film about Leto's return, stated:

Frankly, the ultimate conflict in a universe where Batman exists is for him to confront Joker. I was afraid that if this was the last Justice League with Ben [Affleck's Batman] and Jared, it would be remiss if I couldn't figure out a way for them to come into conflict. Also, it was a wish of mine to bring Joker into the continuing storyline. I hinted at it in Batman v Superman – when you see Batman's gun in the post-apocalyptic world, it has a Joker playing card taped to it. This has a little bit to do with that concept.

Though Jared Leto may not be seen as Joker for some time in the future, he joins the Marvel Studios family via Sony Pictures' Morbius, releasing April 1.
